Projects

As a leading urban designer, David has developed an expansive portfolio of projects across diverse sectors.

Independent Consultancy

David has recently contributed to projects for state and local government, as well as the private and education sectors.

Hodyl & Co

David led several built form studies and design frameworks including Future South Melbourne for the City of Port Phillip. He has significant expertise in the use of density controls (floor area ratio). In all projects, principles supporting good design were developed as a foundation for rigorous built form and capacity testing, and to set clear expectations for future development.

He undertook design review including leading a review of the Urban Design Framework within the Central Hobart Plan and the City of Stonnington’s Housing Strategy.

David developed built form policy and design guidelines for local and state government. This included low rise apartments for Brimbank City Council and student accommodation for Monash City Council.

He delivered various projects for the creative sector, from studies for creative organisations investigating the future of individual buildings and precincts, through to strategies and plans for municipal-wide creative infrastructure.

City of Melbourne

David led the Macaulay Structure Plan, establishing a future vision, new built form controls, public realm improvements, open space and infrastructure requirements. He advocated for alternative built form outcomes in Arden that better aligned building typologies and good design outcomes with the future vision for the area.

Yarra City Council

David made a significant contribution to the Swan Street Structure Plan and Johnston Street Local Area Plan. He provided regular urban design advice on planning applications, including for strategic redevelopment sites, and reviewed the Victorian Government’s draft Better Apartment Design Standards.

Maccreanor Lavington

David led the Blackhorse Lane Urban Design Framework for the London Borough of Waltham Forest. The framework guides sustainable development in the area, providing a coordinated plan for streets, massing, and public spaces, and promoting the co-location of industrial and non-industrial uses to create a mixed-use neighbourhood.
